Is it important to learn songs in order to become a great…?

Hi guys, I used to play a lot of covered songs with my band .Mostly hard rock stuff  like Purple, Zeppelin, Rainbow …even Ozzy .Although we couldn’t play exactly what they were, we were still enjoying yourself  and having really good fun as long as we were doing a lot of gigs and shows with these songs years before. In the meantime, it was really a good way to ‘Know’ different techniques and playing styles. However, just what I said ‘Know’, but not exactly ‘Learn’ the right way to play guitar.

You probably wondered at some time or another if it is important for you to learn songs in order to become a good guitar player? This is a very common question that I am asked a lot.  I will tell you the whole story about this issue here.

To put it simply, no, learning songs is not “necessary” for most guitar players.  I should clarify that I certainly do not mean to say that learning songs is “bad” or “useless”, nor do I want to discourage you from learning them if this is something that you really want to do (for your own enjoyment).

But for goals such as learning to improvise or solo, improving your guitar technique, becoming a professional musician, or (even!!) songwriting, learning to play songs is not something you should spend a lot of time on.

Most of the time, a more productive use of your time would be spending your time acquiring a thorough understanding of how music works, and writing songs in your favorite styles.  As far as learning songs, what I DO recommend for you is to study and ANALYZE songs by your favorite artists and composers.  Find out why their music sounds the way that it does. That’s what I am trying to do these days. Sometimes you may need to learn an excerpt of a certain song or solo for educational purposes, but rarely is there a need to dedicate a significant amount of time to learning songs all the way through. We only have a limited amount of time to practice each day. It is possible to become great without ever learning a single song all the way through.

My objective here is to share my opinion about the “need” to learn songs in order to become a good guitar player or to reach most other goals, and whatever your goals are, learning to play and how to play should be the main issue we need to be concerned with!.
